5 Things to Know Before Your First Cruise

Thinking about taking your first cruise? Whether you’re sailing to the Caribbean, Alaska, or Europe, there are a few things first-time cruisers should know to make their vacation smooth and stress-free:

1. You’ll Need to Arrive the Day Before

Flights can be delayed, or other travel mishaps can occur. Always plan to get to your departure city at least one day early so you don’t risk missing your ship. Kick off your cruise stress-free by arriving early so you can slip into vacation mode!

2. Not Everything Is Included

Most cruises include your stateroom, meals in the main dining rooms, and basic entertainment—but specialty dining, Wi-Fi, excursions, and drinks often cost extra. Budget ahead to avoid surprises—I can help you plan for this!

3. Pack a Carry-On Bag

Your checked luggage might not arrive at your cabin until later in the evening. Keep essentials—like medications, swimsuits, and travel documents—in a small carry-on bag.

4. Download the Cruise Line’s App

Most cruise lines have an app where you can check daily schedules, make reservations, and even message your travel party on board. It’s helpful to download the app as soon as your trip is confirmed so you can become familiar with the features.

5. You’ll Need Proper Travel Documents

Make sure your passport (or birth certificate for some U.S. sailings) is valid well beyond your return date. Check if your itinerary requires visas or additional paperwork.
